June 11, 2006. Heading north for landscapes.

No, we didn't go to Niagara Falls. We got enough of crowded places in Europe. I wanted to see more quiet places and decided to go north in the direction of Georgian Bay of Lake Huron.

It was Sunday, with roads almost free of cars, when we took Highway 10 to north-west from Mississauga and then turned west in Orangeville. At about noon we stopped near a beach in Kincardine.

Lake Huron. Beach in Kincardine.

I saw the sign "Lighthouse" on the street and we went in that direction along the lake shore. The lighthouse was actually very small - I forgot that we were not in a sea port.

We have found that outside of Toronto it's a big problem if you want to find some kind of fast food but not the standard "fast food" in bad sense. In big cities, it seems, you can always have some more of less fast but edible stuff from Asians, but as soon as we've left Toronto, we haven't seen anything but standard places like McDonald's. So we took out lunch at one in Kincardine. And then went further north. The next stop was at Sauble Beach. It's a very long one, and spacious so that you have to "drive in". The season of paid entrance and crowds of vacationers has not yet begun and there were just two or three other cars.

The parking area (also completely on the sand) and the beach itself are separated with a small sand dam. You even have road signs, like on normal roads:

The stop was short and we had to go to some populated area and find a motel. That was in Owen Sound, located, of course, at Owen Sound at Georgian Bay. When planing our vacation, I have found that there are several small waterfalls in Grey County, where Owen Sound is located. See www.visitgrey.ca for details.

The motel we found was not a place where you want to stay several nights long, but well, after all, we wanted to see "what those motels are". To my surprise, this one was operated by an Indian (as from India) family. Surprise, for you don't see a lot of immigrants in rural areas.

After finding a room, we wanted to have a walk to Jones Falls that is located almost in the town. The guys in the motel said we can probably walk there, so we tried but did not find it actually. The next morning we've found that it's located probably 300 meters further down the road where you don't have sidewalk anymore. The have sidewalks and even traffic lights for pedestrians there - our second surprise (though we were alone on the sidewalk).
